Why I Cannot Stop Watching Korean Drama/Movie Content
The other day I was pondering as to why I continued watching Kdrama all these years and I think I found my answer.
It has been about 3 years since I started watching Kdrama religiously. I have watched all types - comedy, thrillers, murder, slapstick, tearjerkers, drama, romance - you name it. Maybe I would have left out a few genres such as horror or watched less time travel, and teen romances. But it still keeps me hooked and I am left wanting more.
The fact that most of the series are 12-16 episodes long makes them better than Indian serials that go on for decades. Yes, some dailies do go on for several months but they are fairly better than our Indian ones.
Why do I like them, that I keep watching and that the audience across the world keeps growing by the minute?
Well, the stories have some element of human touch, they explore relationships, base their stories on mental health-related topics, hospitals/medical, and trauma, and insert some element of truth in them that makes them even more relatable.
I am not a sucker for romance but while the romance stories and setups in most dramas are to cater to the younger audience, there are slow-burn romances that will make even a stone-hearted person's heart would sing songs...
They cater to all sections of society and with the advent of OTTs, their influence is only increasing.
Yes, I do agree that everything cannot be realistic but it has become my escape room and I indulge in it to keep myself sane and content and as an outlet to my current life.
Another aspect that makes one want to watch them repeatedly is the actors - yes they are all good-looking, they wear great clothes and these clothes are not vulgar. Yes, sometimes the women may wear skimpy clothes but it suits them and they do not look vulgar or ugly in them at all. I can't remember the series where I saw some cleavage - it is that clean. They ensure that the content is clean enough for teens to watch.
Yes, some stories go overboard with school violence, mugging, murder, and such but so is the case everywhere.
Now coming to the films - if you want a reality check and want to continue living in a scary reality, Korean movies are what you must watch. They are totally different from the dramas you watch. You will hope for a good ending but most often it leaves you flabbergasted and asking - why! Could it not have been otherwise - no because reality is different from drama.
But yet, I watch Kdrama and Kmovies on a regular basis depending on my mood and emotions. They are surely helping me and will help you too - just maintain a detached attachment with the characters, take the learnings, and move on. Maybe at my age it is easier but do try practicing this daily, it will help.
As long as there is a Kuniverse/Kverse, this Kdrama addict will continue watching them and taking joy from it.
