Why I Cannot Stop Watching Korean Drama/Movie Content

Image
The other day I was pondering as to why I continued watching Kdrama all these years and I think I found my answer.  It has been about  3  years since I started watching Kdrama religiously. I have watched all types - comedy, thrillers, murder, slapstick, tearjerkers, drama, romance - you name it. Maybe I would have left out a few genres  such  as horror  or  watched less time  travel,  and   teen romances. But it still keeps me hooked  and  I am left wanting more. The fact that most of the series are 12-16 episodes long makes them better than Indian serials that go on for decades.  Yes, some dailies  do  go on for several months  but   they  are  fairly  better than our Indian ones.   Why do I like  them,  that I keep watching and that the audience  across the world  keeps growing by the minute? Well, the stories have some element of human touch , they  explor...

Double Patty - Light but an Endearing Korean Movie

Image
Image from IMDB Like always, a few actors leave an impression on you so much that you go on a spiral watching their every Kdrama or movie. And in the same fashion, I stumbled upon this movie of Shin Seung-ho who played the adorable crown prince of Daeho in Alchemy of Souls 1 & 2 . I wondered how this film would be since it was about a wrestler with Shin Seung-ho playing a wrestler Kang Woo-ram who quits the sport after his coach passes away suddenly. There was something very endearing about this movie that keeps you hooked on till the very end. How that double Patty that he encounters by chance becomes the central theme that connects him to the FL Lee Hyun-ji played by Irene forms the story. It is pretty slow, like most Korean films, very much like our lives, but those small details in the mundane is what is brought out very beautifully. Every Korean movie does that, just that not every film can be watched and stomached by the general audience. The secret to film making one has to ...

Short Reviews Of The Kdramas I've Watched - Part 2

So we continue from Part 1 ... Strongest Deliveryman Watched this after being mesmerised by Kim Seon-Ho's Chief Hong in Hometown Cha Cha Cha and his second lead role in StartUp. Nice story, and has the usual elements, my first Goo Kyung-Pyo drama, and I loved his understated playing of the lead role. Has a strong female lead too. Overall a good story about community, being helpful, and being grateful. It was nice to see how the delivery boys have each other's backs almost all the time.  Itaewon Class This one deserves a separate post but since it has been quite some time since I saw this KDrama, I will stick to a short review. Park Seo-joon all the way! Love his crew-cut hair and how he plays the character to the T. I don't know why but I love him in such roles, I saw one recently (Midnight Runners) and the way he exudes innocence and honesty in the roles he plays is truly worth noting.  It is the story of how the underdog takes on a giant and wins. OST is awesome, espec...

The King And The Clown - Korean Movie (2005) - Poignant, Deep, Must-Watch!

Image
Source: Internet Since I am on a Lee Joon Gi marathon when I was reading up about him, this one movie kept cropping up over and over again - the movie that was responsible for the rising popularity of the young man that he was in 2005.  Set in 15th/16th century Korea, this period drama touches upon several aspects in the subtlest of ways. There are hints of homosexuality, they talk about the tyrant king, freedom of expression, and of course the traditional arts that are used to showcase these.  In Tamil Nadu, the street plays are referred to as Theru Koothu and it is refreshing to see them in other parts of the world too.  This film had pretty much lesser known "stars" but the output is simply outstanding. Be it King Yeonsan, the tightrope walker Jang-sang or my new favourite, Lee Joon Gi who plays Gong-gil.  These tightrope walkers/minstrels, street performers mock the King and are jailed but get a chance to escape punishment if they make the King laugh, and ...
