Thirty-nine
Story of 3 best friends who are single and how they find their better halves while also discovering one of them has a stage 4 terminal illness, all this as they near their 40s. Heart-warming, the characters grow on you, especially Son Ye-jin and Yeon Woo-jin. How nice it would be to have someone like these friends whom you could lean on in times of sadness and enjoy in times of happiness. As I also near this age, I heave a long sigh, if only...
Watch it for the fantastic performances and a heartwarming storyline, and yes you will get teary-eyed here and there but if this is something that will trigger you, please do due diligence.
Witch's Love
An older woman falls in love with a much younger man, add to the mix, some history of each of the leads, some whacky moments, slapstick comedy, and voila, you have a script. Watched it for Park Seo-Joon, so dreamy he looks. There's a song in the OST album that he has sung himself, cute one though.
Tomorrow
A deep dive into the lives of Grim Reapers with a lot of insight on suicides, the afterlife, the underworld, death, and life - wow. This one really blew my mind but I am not in a position to write an entire blog reviewing it. Many people I spoke to felt this series was a bit heavy since it touched upon suicides and death. I really loved all the actors playing the roles and especially Kim Hee-sun and Lee Soo-hyuk. I think if we watch it we will get an understanding of how precious life is, how we have to live on till we die and not be disheartened by the various maladies of life. Good lessons there touched my heart. Must watch! Trigger warning, please do due diligence.
Yumi's Cells 1&2
Writer Kim Yumi finds love and has her heart broken in season 1 and finds someone again by the end of it and it repeats in S2. Although we go through a roller-coaster of emotions along with Kim Yumi, the title character, it is adorable. The scenes look dreamy, with nice clothes and yummy food in the frames. I really enjoyed watching the cells in action and it is very much an extended version of the animated film, Inside Out. Am glad that the cells/animation part has equal screen time as the real-life characters. I'd recommend this series to anyone who wants to see something light, nice, and interesting.
Sound of Magic
My first JCW drama and I somehow could not relate to this. A very short series of 6 episodes, musical at that. There's magic, there are butterflies, there's music, there's dance, there's a theme park, there's everything but somehow it did not suit me. Everyone around me was praising this series but I did not enjoy it as much as the others did, maybe because I am not so keen on musicals. But the words Annarasumanara have stuck with me, lol!
Backstreet Rookie
I watched this only and only for JCW who plays the supportive, good-natured, and kind-hearted convenience store owner. Very predictable plot, with some irritating moments in the name of slapstick with some of the characters and nice fight sequences from the heroine though.
Lovestruck In The City
I hated the lead heroine from My Liberation Notes, I know many people love her but somehow I only liked her in Fight For My Way. The characters she plays are very irritating. Lovestruck in the city is a hopeless drama, I forced myself to watch it for JCW but it dragged so much and I did not enjoy the story, very unlike Korean style. If I am not wrong, it was made for Netflix (?), and that, my friends is a reason to dump it. Stopped watching it after probably the 4th or 5th episode. Torture!!! If you love romance/romantic dramas, you might enjoy but it was way too cringey for me.
Cinderella and Four Knights
For once, I thought this rich boy poor girl rom-com story was a good one. The lead pair is simply too cute. Park So-dam and Jung Il-woo are so lovely together... Any girl would fall for Il-woo, sigh. His smile is mesmerising and the way he sits in the driver seat and drives the car is very distinct. A pretty engaging story that has the usual elements - childhood connection, working two-three jobs, etc, etc.
